My Approach

I take a compassionate, collaborative approach to counselling — integrating somatic awareness, creative expression, and talk therapy to support your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. In our sessions, I incorporate moments of fun and humour, creating a warm and approachable environment that can make the healing process feel more natural and authentic.

Sessions go beyond traditional talk therapy by integrating the body’s wisdom and encouraging awareness of physical sensations and emotions. We’ll take the time to slow down, be present, and connect with the moment, using mindfulness, visualization, somatic awareness, and creative expression practices to explore your experiences at your own pace. This integrative, lighthearted approach provides space for authentic self-exploration, offering the potential for growth and inner healing. In my practice, I draw from a variety of evidence-based therapeutic modalities, including:

Frequently Asked Questions

Are online sessions as effective as in-person sessions?
arrow_drop_down

Yes — online counselling offers the flexibility to connect from anywhere and fits more easily into a busy schedule. Sessions are offered through Jane App, a secure video platform compliant with Canadian healthcare privacy laws.

Cancellation & Missed Session Policy
arrow_drop_down

Your appointment time is reserved specifically for you. If you need to cancel or reschedule an appointment, I require a minimum of 24 hours' notice. This allows me the opportunity to offer the time to another client who may be waiting for services.

Life is full of unexpected events, and sometimes cancelling a session is unavoidable. To respect both your time and mine, and to keep my practice consistent and fair for everyone, I have the following policy in place:

  • Cancellations with more than 24 hours' notice: no charge.
  • Cancellations with less than 24 hours' notice, or missed sessions: the full session fee applies.

Please send cancellations by email to bethany@soulflowtherapy.com or through your Jane account, so the timing is clear for both of us.

Cancellation fees are charged to the card you have on file, unless you've arranged another payment method with me. You'll receive an invoice by email. Because a cancellation fee isn't a counselling session, it isn't reimbursable through extended health benefits — your Jane receipt will show it as a cancellation.

If paying a cancellation fee would create real financial difficulty for you, please tell me. I'd rather hear about it than have it sit between us, I can reduce the fee. You don't need to explain the circumstances.

Thank you for supporting these guidelines. They're what allow me to offer a consistent, fair and caring practice for all of my clients.

Can I book a consultation before committing to a session?
arrow_drop_down

Yes, I offer complimentary phone consultations to help you determine if we’re a good fit. This is a great opportunity to ask any questions and learn more about my approach.

Do I need to be an artist to do Art Therapy?
arrow_drop_down

Not at all. There is no experience required as art therapy is about the process rather than the product of your creation. Exploring creatively is more about the feelings that you have during your journey rather than what the image looks like at the end.

Do you accept insurance?
arrow_drop_down

Most extended health plans in BC cover the services of Registered Clinical Counsellors. Refer to your plan manual or call the insurer and they will be able to assist you.

If you have coverage, you will be required to pay me directly in full for your session, and then submit your receipt to your insurance company for reimbursement.

How many counselling sessions will I need?
arrow_drop_down

The number of sessions varies depending on your unique situation and goals. Some individuals may find relief in just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support. We’ll discuss your needs and tailor the frequency of sessions to your progress and comfort.

What is Art Therapy?
arrow_drop_down

Art therapy is a form of counselling that uses creativity and creative expression as part of the therapeutic process. This can include art-making such as drawing, painting, or collage — but it can also involve creative conversation, metaphor, working with materials like clay or colouring, or simply exploring ideas through an art-based lens.

Rather than focusing on what you create, art therapy is about what comes up during the process of engaging creatively. It can be especially helpful when words feel limited or when something is difficult to talk about directly. No artistic experience or talent is needed — just a willingness to explore.

What is Somatic Therapy?
arrow_drop_down

Somatic therapy is an approach to counselling that attends to the connection between mind and body. By tuning into physical sensations, somatic therapy can support the processing of thoughts, feelings, and emotions that may show up as stored stress, tension, or activation in the body.

Drawing from Somatic Experiencing® (SE™) and other body-based approaches, I support you in noticing physical sensations and emotions at a pace that feels manageable. By gently attending to these sensations, we explore what the body may be holding — and what might begin to shift.

What should I expect in my first counselling session?
arrow_drop_down

The first session is focused on getting to know each other, understanding your concerns, and establishing your goals for therapy. We’ll explore what brought you here and discuss how counselling can support your needs.

What should I wear for a somatic therapy session?
arrow_drop_down

Clothing that is comfortable and allows for exploration of movement.

What types of issues can counselling help with?
arrow_drop_down

Counselling can help with a wide range of issues, including anxiety, stress, depression, trauma, body image concerns, self-esteem, relationship challenges, and personal growth. Together, we’ll explore what’s most important to you.

If you are curious about working together, I would love to connect. In person in Port Moody, serving Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam, and online across BC.
